Kenya's population is among the most diverse in Africa. The African peoples of Kenya, who make up about 98 percent of the total population, but Kenya is also home to various ethnic groups. These groups immigrated during the colonial rule from India and Pakistan. They are divided on the basis of religious affiliation into Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. Kenya has no state religion, but the majority of Africans are members of the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and other Protestant churches.

Most of Kenya's population lives in scattered settlements. A deep sense of kinship is one of the strongest forces in traditional society. The family unit includes children, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters who may have their own children, and other immediate relatives. Polyigamy is practiced in Kenya and each wife will usually have her own house within the same compound where the other wives and their households live. The area occupied by one or more households in called a village. Each village includes houses, gardens or fields, a cattle shed, outdoor firepit, children's play areas, and family shrines. Houses are normally built around the village compound so if there are several houses in one compound they form a circle or semi-circle.
